Cybersecurity Is No Longer Just an IT Issue
By Leretha Legal (Pty) Ltd
In an increasingly connected world, cybersecurity is no longer simply an IT concern.
It is a governance, compliance and reputational issue that demands the attention of boards, executives and organisational leaders.
Cyber threats continue to evolve in both frequency and sophistication. A single phishing email, weak password or compromised device can provide unauthorised access to sensitive information, disrupt operations and expose organisations to significant legal and regulatory consequences.
Under South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), organisations have a responsibility to safeguard personal information and implement appropriate security measures. Failure to do so can result in regulatory scrutiny, financial losses and lasting damage to stakeholder confidence.
But the impact of a cyber incident extends beyond compliance.
Trust takes years to build and seconds to lose.
Customers, employees, investors and the public expect organisations to act responsibly when it comes to protecting information. A breach can undermine confidence, damage reputations and erode relationships that have taken years to establish.
For this reason, cybersecurity should form part of an organisation’s broader governance and risk management framework. It requires more than technology alone. Effective protection depends on sound policies, clear accountability, regulatory compliance and a culture of awareness throughout the organisation.
Leaders should be asking critical questions:
- Are our governance structures equipped to address cyber risks?
- Are we compliant with POPIA and other applicable regulatory requirements?
- Do we have appropriate policies and incident response mechanisms in place?
- How prepared are we to respond to a breach or cyber attack?
- Are we adequately protecting the interests of our stakeholders?
Organisations that take cybersecurity seriously are not simply protecting information.
They are protecting their reputation, their stakeholders and their future.
At Leretha Legal, we assist institutions, businesses and leadership teams with governance frameworks, regulatory compliance and legal risk management to help them navigate the challenges of an increasingly digital environment.
Because effective cybersecurity is not just about technology.
It is about trust, accountability and responsible governance.
